Amman & Petra

These past two days have been extremely long and packed with activities, which has been great and exhausting.

We started the day yesterday in Amman and did a tour of the city for the first half. We went around and saw the various ruins that are throughout the city, including an old Greek temple, a massive Roman theater, and a church from the 6th century BC which has a mosaic map on the floor of all the holy places in the Middle East. The crazy thing is that it is actually completely accurate with the distances and layout of everything, comparable to the accuracy of a satellite picture. We then continued on to a workshop where they currently make mosaic pieces where they showed us the tedious process which is used to hand make a variety of things.

The women working on a mosaic picture.

We ended our time in Amman at Mt. Nebo, where Moses was shown the promised land. It was a pretty fantastic view, and luckily it was a pretty clear day, so we were able to see Jericho, the Dead Sea, and the Jordan River. We couldn't quite see all the way to Jerusalem, which apparently can be seen on the clearest days.

The view at the top of Mt. Nebo.

After Amman we drove in the bus for three hours to Petra. We had dinner at our hotel, then went and did Petra at night. They had the whole walkway down to the famous Treasury which is carved into the mountain lit up with candles. It was pretty incredible walking down in the night and I felt like it really gave you a better idea of how it was way back in the day when it was a busy trade route. Once at the bottom we sat and listened to traditional Bedouin music in the dark.

This morning we headed into the canyon at about 8:30 to see the Treasury during the day. We then continued on past it to go farther into the canyon and see the whole city that was set up in the mountains. It was pretty incredible, really it's almost impossible to explain the vastness of this place and pictures don't do it any justice at all.

On the way down to the Treasury.

The Treasury, as seen in Indiana Jones.

Only some of the countless tombs which are carved into the mountains with some Bedouin locals.

Throughout the day we hiked about 10 miles and rode donkeys, camels, and horses, all of which I loved. The donkeys were hilarious and how we didn't fall off the mountain cliffs I don't know. While riding the camels everyone was on pairs of camels which were connected to each other. I was on a camel which was connected to one of the guides, though, so he had us racing up through the canyon leaving the group way behind. It was pretty fun, though I did devise an escape route for jumping off the camel if it seemed like he was going to start taking me the wrong way. Don't worry, I swear it's totally safe here. On the horses they usually have a guide walking you up the mountain, but they let me go on my own so I was racing one of the guides, galloping up to the top. It was a pretty great end to the day.

Part of our group on the donkeys.

We took the donkeys to the top to see this Monastery which is actually three times larger than the more famous Treasury.

A good group shot at the top. The man and woman on the right are the ones who put this trip together, Jim and Carol Gee, they are incredible and I love to listen to Jim just talk on and on, he seems to know everything about these places.

This is a Bedouin girl who Jim and Carol have known since she was five and they see her every time they come. She is extremely smart and really funny, she loves to follow the group around throughout the day.

The horse I rode out of the canyon at the end of the day.

We've been extremely lucky with the weather here. Apparently the last two weeks have been miserably hot with no breeze at all, but we've had great temperatures, maybe in the high 80's, if even that, with nice breezes always. Tomorrow we're waking up super early to go hiking all over from 6-11:30am. Our guide Jim is going to take us to the dig he's been working on this past month and show us all the things they've found. Honestly, I had no idea this is what I was signing up for, but I'm totally thrilled with it all and loving it, though I am exhausted. It's truly amazing being in all of these places and thinking of all of the things that have happened around here. Tonight is our last night in Petra, then tomorrow night we're staying in the middle of the desert at a Bedouin camp, so I'm not sure I'll be able to update for a few days.

3 Planes and 17 hours later...

I found myself in Amman, Jordan.
I made it safely and really don't remember much of the trip, which suggests that it was completely uneventful and I slept through most of the flights. Of course getting to the airport in DC was hectic and I definitely cut it close, but ultimately I made it with no problems.

I arrived at the airport in Amman to a nice man holding a sign with my name. He proceeded to help me get my visa and luggage then accompanied me to my hotel. I was glad he was there because I'm sure I couldn't have navigated it all by myself, especially in my exhausted state. I'm not afraid of traveling alone and ultimately think I can get myself anywhere in any country, but it would've been a little tough and maybe a little scary here. I realized when I arrived that I didn't even know what the currency of Jordan was and how it translates with US dollars, so I was giving out tips to all those who helped me having no idea how much I was actually giving them. Oh well, hopefully I've got it figured out now.

Tomorrow we tour the city of Amman then head over to Petra where we'll stay for a couple nights. I'm pretty excited. I really haven't focused on or thought about this trip much at all since I left Utah three weeks ago, so now that I'm actually here it's a little crazy, but I'm sure it'll be great. I should get to sleep, hopefully this jet lag doesn't get the better of me and I can actually be awake and functioning tomorrow!

We've Come Full Circle - Sister Update

We seem to be back on my blog again for the sister update. Unfortunately I haven't made a single post since the last sister update. Oh well, I guess my possible return will be a slow one. Enjoy!

SARAH

Last Week:
  • started back with THF. that was really tough when Mom came by and made my favorite chocolate chip cookies and I didn't even have one. I got him to put chips & salsa on my plan, though, so I at least have that (albeit limited portions). that also means I got back on the treadmill this week, and also got him to approve yoga instead of weight training.
  • didn't spend any money Monday through Thursday, other than one tank of gas, and monthly tuition for guitar, piano and preschool. But no stores, no restaurants, no unnecessary outings.
  • did lots of work on my old work project, which didn't really help me with my new one much. but at least that one is "officially" done now so I can really focus better.
  • watched Black Swan with Scott on pay-per-view. Stayed awake for the whole thing. Couldn't walk through the dark house alone afterward. Weird and creepy but loved the dancing.
  • finished & mailed Mi Na's xmas stocking
This Week:
  • SPRING BREAK!!!! that means we can sleep in, although it also means i need to entertain the boys every day. we're really hoping for good weather most of the week so there can be lots of biking and RC car driving outside. we've also talked about going to the skatepark, surfing at provo beach resort, hiking the Y, going swimming, one more day of SKIING, and maybe biking to the lake.
  • update my blog!!
  • start working on George's v2 xmas stocking
  • plan Oliver's baptism - make assignments & print programs
  • figure out how to afford this coffee table for the living room makeover. it'll probably have to be done in phases over time, which is a much less dramatic way to do a makeover.
  • new haircuts and baptism outfits for the whole crew. i'm not usually one for new easter outfits, but since Oli's baptism is the day before maybe we can justify it this year.
  • lots of promo for the lower lights provo show april 22 - do i really have to go flyering again?! - talk about pretending I'm 20 again
  • big announcement for rooftop series this week on cjanerun.com
ANNEE

Last Week:
  1. Ran the Tar Heel 10-miler on Saturday! The weather was ideal. My less than five hours of sleep the night before wasn’t. But, I still managed to pull out with a sub-8 minute mile pace for the whole race. Not too bad for a girl who’s getting kind of old. It would be more awesome if they had been flat 7:30 minute miles. Maybe that’s the goal for the next race, when there are fewer hills involved! Oh yeah, and the Espresso Love GU gel which they randomly handed me at mile 5, and I “ate” around mile 7 1/2 may or may not have had something to do with the extra kick in my step during the final two grueling miles. Maybe that Espresso Love GU was in violation of the Word of Wisdom? I think it may have been straight Espresso in gel format? I’m just guessing. It may have also been totally awesome.
  2. Managed to fully attend only one out of three of the baseball games. The second game was in conflict with the school art show which the little sisters really wanted to go to. So we left baseball minutes before George got up to bat, and made it to third base! The third game was in conflict with the pre-race spaghetti dinner I was hosting at my house for the group of girls from church who were also running the race. George was so kind to forgive me. I’ll try to be there for all of his “up-to-bats” this week.
  3. I made huge progress on my value quilt!! http://madeonmaple.blogspot.com/2011/04/company-in-sewing-garage.html. It’s only a baby size quilt, but it’s really lovely. It was very fun and I’m glad I gave it a go. It’s not done yet, but should get finished this week.
This Week:
  1. Spent Monday subbing for one of the kindergarten classes. Neither Jane nor Ruby were in my class, but lots of their friends were. It was totally funny and exhausting, all wrapped up into one big day of school day learning.
  2. Will spend all day Tuesday at the Zoo on the kindergarten field trip!
  3. Will finish reading “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” this week. http://www.amazon.com/Snow-Flower-Secret-Fan-Novel/dp/0812968069. It’s in my audible library should anyone feel the need to borrow it. It’s been an extremely compelling listen. But it’s kind of hard to listen to too. It’s sort of a tragic and complicated story about women’s issues in China during the 19th century. I hope there aren’t any women in China who are still treated this way today. But sometimes I fear that there are. Anyway, it’s been interesting to say the very least. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good book. Randomly I also recently read “The Good Earth” which is also placed in China at about the same time in history. That story is told from the male perspective. I have to say that having recently read “The Good Earth” has significantly increased my appreciation for “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan”.

Last Week:
  • Went visiting teaching. It's all "done" for the month, but hopefully there will be other opportunities to help out.
  • Did three workouts.
  • Took Mi Na in for her 9 month checkup. She's in the 40th percentile for weight, 74th for height, and 26th for head circumference.
  • I did the coupon thing. I got some great deals, but it took a lot of time and planning.
  • Hit a wall, figuratively speaking. Just one more week of tax season, and maybe then our kids will remember how to sleep and be kind to each other.
  • A Sunday picnic with my family.
This Week:
  • I really want to get to bed around 10 and wake up around 5:30. Everything works out so much better when I can do that.
  • A trip to the farm
  • A couple of play dates
  • Be more consistent with workouts
  • Sew an Easter dress or skirt for Mi Na. Do you have any skirt or dress pattern recommendations, Annee?
  • Purchase an Easter outfit for myself (?)
  • BYU Management Society Dinner. I have to figure out babysitting. I've never had a babysitter put Mi Na down for bed, how will this work?
RACHEL

Last Week:
  • I don't know what I was thinking when I said try not to work past midnight. I failed that goal every day. Including Friday & Saturday.
  • Sadly I did not make it to Anthropologie.
  • Ken celebrated our (now unofficial) anniversary by making French Dip Sandwiches and trying to wait up for me. I made it in time to have one for breakfast.
  • I received a very thoughtful and sweet flower arrangement from the Sazband family. Thank you thank you again!
  • Worked 98.7 billable hours. As I added it up I did not believe it, so I understand if you don't. It may sound horrible, and while I wouldn't say it's awesome, there is something amazing and faith promoting about accomplishing something that you could never have done on your own. I was given an impossible task/schedule this season, and somehow, I am doing it. It feels good to be helped and remembered and to receive what I need most in the exact moments I need it.
This Week:
  • Work.
  • Anthropologie on Thursday/Friday. I don't care what it takes, I will be there.
  • Desperately continue to gather referrals for a new salon. A haircut MUST happen this weekend or Monday. I am so ashamed.
  • Attend a baseball game with a partner and a client on Friday. I'm nervous. Baseball games are long.
  • Marriott School Alumni Gala on Saturday with Elder Uchtdorf.
  • Dream item: See Atlas Shrugged which comes out on Friday. Won't happen, writing it anyway.
CHRISTINE

Last Week:
  • Finally got my taxes sent off in the mail AND helped two friends get their taxes done, it's nice to be able to be helpful thanks to my degree. You may ask why someone would use such an outdated method as sending taxes in the mail when there are much more convenient and quicker methods now with e-filing, but apparently the IRS has a different birthday on record for me, and whatever birthday they have is what social security has for me? Not sure what's wrong with it all but it's actually gotten me questioning my birthday a little.
  • Finally got the headlight on the Jetta fixed. I had gone some time with it burned out and eventually got pulled over because of it. Luckily the cop barely glanced at my license and simply told me my headlight was out, but I guess that was enough of a push to get it fixed.
  • Went bowling! For some reason I had been craving bowling for a little bit, so I got to go get my fix. Random I know.
  • Enjoyed a charity fashion show and dance party with Addie, Beth, and Katie. Maybe all of the designs were just so high fashion and beyond me, but it definitely was some pretty crazy stuff, definitely not what I thought was currently fashion, but fun nonetheless.
This Week:
  • Went to a Utah Bees game with friends Monday night. The crowd was pretty sparse but it was fun to get excited for warm summer nights and the heckling was pretty great.
  • Attend my last college class ever. I realize that I should probably be a little more sentimental about this, but in fact I'm pretty indifferent about it. Maybe it just hasn't really hit me yet.
  • Start packing up my room. This I am a little more sad about, I really like my room a lot.
  • Complete a creative final project for my strategy class, study for two small finals, and prepare for my take-home spreadsheets final. Luckily finals this semester are not looking too bad at all, so that's definitely a plus.
  • Hike the Y with the Wileys.

Sisters. (Oh, and welcome back!)

So it's my turn to post the sister updates for the week. We're trying to start a tradition, you can see the inaugural week here at Rachel's blog. There was some concern as to whether or not I still had a blog so that I could participate in the rotation, and I assured all that I did in fact still have a blog, though I'm sure I have no readers, so this may only be seen by a select few. I've been thinking a lot about this blog, and I want to keep it going, but I need to make some changes to it so that I feel like it's actually representative of me, and not just some front I've thrown up on the internet. So, that being said, I'm not wanting to make some big announcement of my return only to let people down again, but it's possible that I will be slowly adding more to this here blog. Anyway, let's get onto the interesting stuff, shall we?

SARAH

Last week's agenda:
- sent Scott and The Lower Lights off on tour - prepped all the merch - tshirts, patches, buttons, cds, made signs, itineraries, spreadsheets, bought snacks, etc.
- lost my voice
- pulled an all-nighter to finish a work project (actually to start and finish a work project that the group thought I'd started a week ago)
- made it to 6am yoga twice - very sore!
This week's agenda:
- aiming for 3 days of yoga
- make some plans for Scott's bday
- rooftop planning meeting - we'll nail down the lineup and start coordinating with volunteers
- feed the ducks
- maybe buy these shoes with my leftover xmas credit?
- figure out our east-coast trip

ANNEE

Last week's agenda:
- Got my hair repaired!! It was long over due and a lovely day at the salon. And in the end was blessed with two lovely days of salon styled hair. It was heavenly.
- Substitute taught all day Thursday and Friday
- Took Henry to Cirque Eloise at UNC memorial hall. I imagine it was similar to what a Cirque do Soleil performance would be like. It was so excellent that Darin and George went back the very next night.
- I needed to added a bonus forth item, only because I think it’s pretty awesome that so far I had accomplished all that I had stated from last week. Saturday I managed to run a 10-mile long run!! The weather was gorgeous I even got a little bit sunburned on my nose. Which makes me super hopeful that spring is on it’s way! Also hopeful that if you write down things that you want to accomplish, it might actually contribute to your ability to accomplish them. Who would have thought it!
This week's agenda:
- No substitute teaching. It’s Darin’s spring break, so I’m taking the week off too!!
- Have fun hosting Ie Li and kid
s at our house for a few days. Nothing is more happy for me than to be close enough to family that we can have regular visits together. Mi Na is coming to my house!!!
- More sewing. Last week I only managed to make it out to the sewing garage once, maybe twice. I hope Ie Li and I will do a dress sew-along while she is here. I’m looking forward to it.

IE LI

Last week's agenda:
- 2 out of 6 P90X workouts (this is an improvement over the week before)
- kids' swimming lessons and preschool
- hung three wall hooks, two in the entryway for bags and one in my kitchen for aprons
- enjoyed three days of sunshine and warmth
- a carousel ride and cupcakes with Mei Li for Friday's girls' night
- a long overdue date with Steve on Saturday at a nearby Thai restaurant. It was nearly as good as Minh's kitchen in LC.
This week's agenda:
- Monday's P90X workout
- kids' swimming lessons and preschool
- visit Annee in NC and sew something together! (this will take up the majority of the week)

RACHEL

Last week's agenda:
- We saw The Adjustment Bureau. It was interesting. May have been better if we weren't in the front row... Oops.
- I finished Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (SO good, and furthered my fascination with WWI & WWII). I started and almost finished Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers. Annee you're right, that book must be taken in small doses.. weird.
- Ken and I got free tickets to Stars On Ice from one of his co-workers at the courthouse. Floor/ON THE ICE tickets. Crazy, random and awesome.
- Did I mention that I broke
my iPhone screen again? Sad.
This week's agenda:
- Go to the temple on Friday or Saturday.
- Buy tickets for our April trip to Utah. SO excited!
- Make Red Pepper Risotto again per Ken's request. Making dinner is most fun when he asks for something specific.
- Read The Curtain Bible which I received this weekend and make a plan for my kitchen windows.

CHRISTINE

Last week's agenda:
- dinner with Hillary, Beth, and Addie
- worked a shift at Anthropologie (yes, I do in fact still work there, I work so infrequently, though, that I actually enjoy every time I do get to work)
- snowboarding at Park City followed by a visit to the Midway ice castles
This week's agenda:
- take Individual Taxes exam
- grade Jr Core midterms
- check off at least one more item on the Utah Bucket List (the countdown is on until my move away from Utah)
- finally make my return to yoga
- try not to eat out for a full week (starting.... tomorrow?)

That's all! Maybe next time we'll see an appearance from Ana and mom!

PS - I attempted to add in some formatting and styling, but every time I published the post it all disappeared, so I guess I still have some learning to do with this blog.

I'm Official.

Sorry for the teaser post announcing my return followed by silence for a couple weeks. Things have been pretty crazy and time has flown. But just for a quick update, I've officially started my internship. Monday was our first day with orientation followed by an ice cream social, and Tuesday was our first day in the office.

Rachel insisted I pose for a picture outside the ice cream social. You all should thank Rachel for reminding me to be a good picture taker and occasionally encouraging me to blog.

Currently we're in Atlanta for two days of training. It's pretty tiring but a lot of fun and a great way for the interns from our office to really spend some time together and get to know each other. I've got to get to bed because we have another early day tomorrow, but here's a picture to give you an idea of the group I'm with.

Can you tell what it spells?!? The best part is I'm not even the one who suggested this pose.

Goodnight, I promise there will be a better update when I return.

I'm Back.

I've decided to resurrect my blog, at least for the summer. Currently I'm sitting in the JFK airport waiting for my final flight to DC. I figured I might actually have some worthwhile things to blog about this summer, so why not dive back in?

I'm excited for what lays ahead for this summer. I'm really excited to start my internship and to possibly run into Steve and Rachel frequently at the office. And I'm hoping that a lot of adventures will be had during my days in DC!

I will be missing these guys, though, that's for sure.

Fresh Flowers

One of the many benefits to having some truly impressive sisters.

I have one more final at 7AM Wednesday then I'll be able to be back in the real world. See you then!
